This is a self-portrait — though not in the conventional sense. Painted in his studio in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, it captures a man alone at a terrace table, a glass of red wine raised not in toast but in contemplation. The light is late. The shadows are deliberate. Whatever he is thinking about, he has already decided.
When it was finished, he signed it not with his given name, but with something new. The full story of why is told in Chasing Cézanne.
